What On Earth Is Green Coffee?

Friday August 13, 2010

Whatever you might think of it, it certainly doesn’t sound very nice does it?

But this is a true story and it comes from the home of Starbucks, so you can imagine that it can’t be all that bad. After all Starbucks is the home of some of the best coffee beverages in the world.

So what’s all this about green coffee?

Well, news stories online recently reported that Starbucks was experimenting with a new drink involving green coffee beans. Green coffee beans aren’t those that have gone off, as you might initially think. Instead they are beans which haven’t gone through the roasting procedure. This makes them taste slightly different and Starbucks is now using them to help add flavour to a new drink which is meant to be enjoyed cold.

You probably already know that Starbucks has a wide range of drinks available in the coffee department. Tea aficionados can enjoy some Earl Grey and assorted other flavours too. But it is coffee where the chain really excels and it intends to offer cold coffee drinks as well, if this latest news report is to be believed.

It is true of course, but the idea is to use the green and unroasted coffee bean to add flavour rather than provide the basis for the drink itself. To this end they expect it to have a lot less caffeine in it than your standard Starbucks fare offers. In addition to this the drinks will also be good for those watching their waistline. They are supposed to have fewer calories in them as well.

Sadly for those of us in the UK we may have to wait a while to see how the drinks are received by the first few members of the public to try them. They are all set to hit the market in San Diego first, as a test to see whether the drinks are well received or not. They will certainly be something different for Starbucks and its customers to try, so we can only hope they take off and are a success.

If they are, you can expect them to appear in UK branches of Starbucks before too long as well. If not, well, you may have to just imagine what tasting green coffee beans would be like. We suspect the flavour may just be something of a pleasant surprise.
